How It Happened

A Super Bowl blackout. A March Madness upset. For The Players’ Tribune’s How It Happened series, we used animation to bring two stories from sports history back to life. The films pair interviews with illustrated worlds that make room for suspense, humor, and the details behind the headlines. From the lights going out in New Orleans to Duke’s 1991 win over UNLV, the people who were there lead the story.

The Big Easy

The lights went out after halftime at the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans, leaving the Ravens, the 49ers, and the stadium crowd waiting for answers. This animated interview revisits the blackout and asks what really happened.

March Madness

In 1991, Duke pulled off a major March Madness upset. The second How It Happened film tells that story through Greg Anthony, Grant Hill, and Christian Laettner, with our team handling concept design, illustration, 2D animation, editing, and sound design.
